  • Core Overview and Function

  • Ferrous sulfate, commonly known as green vitriol, is a blue-green crystalline solid and is a commonly used iron fertilizer, soil conditioner and fungicide in agriculture. Its main functions can be summarized into three aspects:

  • Correcting iron deficiency (main function) :

  • Iron is an indispensable element in the process of chlorophyll synthesis in plants. When plants lack iron, they cannot form chlorophyll normally, resulting in the leaves losing their green color. The typical symptom is that the flesh of the new tender leaves at the top of the plant turns yellow, but the veins remain green, forming a clear reticular pattern. In severe cases, the entire leaf turns white and shows signs of scorch, withering and necrosis. Ferrous sulfate can directly and rapidly replenish absorbable divalent iron ions (Fe⊃2;⁺) for plants, effectively alleviating and treating chlorosis.

  • Regulate soil pH

  • Ferrous sulfate is a physiologically acidic fertilizer. After being applied to the soil, iron ions are absorbed by plants, and the residual sulfate ions will make the soil solution slightly acidic. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for improving slightly alkaline or calcareous soil, effectively lowering the soil pH value and enhancing the availability of iron.

  • Certain sterilization and disinfection effects:

  • It can be used to control certain mosses and lichens in orchards or nurseries, and has a certain control effect on some tree trunk diseases(such as canker).

  • Applicable to crops and soils

  • Applicable crops:

  • Plants sensitive to iron demand: soybeans, sorghum, peanuts, broad beans, sugar beets, etc.

  • Fruit trees prone to iron deficiency chlorosis: citrus fruits, apples, pears, peaches, grapes, kiwifruits, etc.

  • Ornamental plants prone to iron deficiency chlorosis: rhododendrons, gardenias, jasmine, camellias, osmanthus, hydrangeas, camphor trees, lawns, etc.

  • Applicable soil

  • Calcareous soil and saline-alkali soil are common in northern and coastal areas. Areas where the soil pH value is too high (7.5), causing iron to be fixed and its availability to decrease.

  • Precautions

  • "Prescribe the right medicine" : Use it only after confirming that the yellowing is caused by iron deficiency (interveinal chlorosis of new leaves). Other causes (such as magnesium deficiency, waterlogging, root rot) can also lead to yellowing of leaves. Blind application is ineffective.

  • Prepare and use immediately: Ferrous sulfate solution (especially divalent iron Fe⊃2;⁺) is highly prone to oxidation to trivalent iron (Fe⊃3;⁺) in the air, forming a reddish-brown precipitate that is difficult for plants to absorb. Therefore, it must be used immediately after being prepared and should not be left for a long time.

  • Avoid mixing with alkaline substances

  • It is strictly prohibited to mix with alkaline pesticides or fertilizers such as lime, wood ash, calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer and Bordeaux mixture, otherwise sedimentation will occur and the fertilizer effect will be lost. After spraying ferrous sulfate, it is necessary to wait for 7 to 10 days before applying alkaline pesticides.

  • Control dosage and concentration: Excessive application of ferrous sulfate can increase soil acidity, which may cause poisoning by elements such as manganese and aluminum, and burn the root system and leaves. Be sure to follow the recommended dosage.

  • In combination with organic and acidic fertilizers: For long-term soil improvement, it should be combined with the application of increased organic fertilizers, sulfur powder or the use of other acidic fertilizers (such as ammonium sulfate) to fundamentally improve the soil environment.

  • Consider chelated iron fertilizer: In stubborn iron-deficient soils with extremely high pH values, the effect of ferrous sulfate may not be ideal and it is prone to fixation. At this point, using chelated iron fertilizers (such as EDTA-Fe, EDDHA-Fe) is a more stable and efficient choice, although the cost is relatively high.

  • Ferrous sulfate is an economical and effective traditional fertilizer for correcting iron deficiency chlorosis in plants and improving alkaline soil. The key to its application lies in "speed" (mix and use immediately) and "accuracy" (appropriate method and suitable concentration), and it should be used in combination with organic fertilizers to enhance efficiency. For modern precision agriculture and high-value crops, chelated iron fertilizer is a better but more costly supplementary solution.
